Summary of position:
Working in the Commercial and Economic team of the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom, under the general direction of the Counsellor (Commercial) the incumbent is responsible for providing integrated Innovation and International Business Development (IBD) support to Canadian companies focusing on the creative industries, for the United Kingdom.
The objective of the Trade Commissioner Service is to help Canadian IBD clients access international networks, identify partners and access resources to enhance their ability to compete, innovate and secure new business opportunities abroad.
The candidate is a self-starter with demonstrated enthusiasm for and experience with the creative industries including audio-visual (television and film), music, literature, fashion, visual arts and the performing arts. The candidate must be comfortable working in a team environment and engaging with clients on a regular basis.
The core objective will be the delivery of international business development programs for creative industries which includes, but is not limited to:
• Developing market knowledge;
• Providing strategic advice and troubleshooting to support Canadian clients pursuing business development activities in the market;
• Maintaining relationship with local contacts, Canadian clients, and Canadian government and industry stakeholders;
• Outreach to local contacts to promote Canadian capabilities and identify business leads in the sector;
• Research and communication to support management;
• Participating in the trade team’s business planning cycle, project planning and management of IBD initiatives for creative industries;
• Support for high-level visitors and other urgent priorities.

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened on the essential qualifications below and must demonstrate in their cover letter how they meet these criteria. Only those candidates who meet all the Essential Requirements and demonstrate this clearly within their application will then proceed to the next stage of the process.
Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
• At least five (5) years of recent professional experience working in business development and/or, program delivery in the public sector. *5 years recent experience being defined as within the last 8 years.


• At least eight (8) years of recent professional experience working in business development and/or program delivery in the private or not-for-profit sector in a field related to creative industries. **8 years‎ recent experience being defined as within the last 11 years. ‎

• Experience in managing client and/or stakeholder relationships and in providing client service support to customers/clients.

• Experience in project management (including strategic planning, tracking/reporting results and budget management).

Linguistic Profile: Professional written and oral communication in English

Rated Requirements
Candidates must also meet the Rated Requirements shown below, which will be assessed through any of the following: cover letter, written test, oral communication, interview and reference checks:
• Knowledge of the role of the Government of Canada’s priorities related to creative industries;
• Knowledge of international business development trends and challenges faced by businesses in the UK;
• Knowledge of current trends and developments in Canada and/or the UK in the creative industries; (i.e. film / television, music, written and published work, visual/applied arts, performing arts and heritage).
• Ability to manage client and stakeholder relationships and provide client service support to customers;
• Ability to provide strategic advice, conduct research, prepare briefings, and write reports to management and/or clients on international business issues;
• Ability to develop, manage and maintain a network of key contacts;
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with tight deadlines; and
• Ability to use technology and social media networking and research.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications. Candidates must also clearly demonstrate how they meet these factors in their cover letter.
• The ability to communicate effectively in French both orally and in writing;
• A strong network within UK based Creative Industries;
• Experience in facilitating high level visits, business delegations and event organization;
• A graduate degree from a recognized university.

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
• Must be able to work overtime on short notice on occasion;
• Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends);
• Ability to travel when required.

Condition(s) of Employment:
Hours of work will be 37.5 per week, worked Monday to Friday at time to be arranged by the supervisor. Any job offer is subject to receipt of satisfactory employment and character references and the ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability security screening (including a criminal record check).
Copies of educational qualifications will be required at the interview stage of the process. Successful candidate must have a valid passport and the required documentation allowing the right to work in the UK. Documentation will be required.

This position is open to candidates currently resident in the UK, who hold current documentation allowing them to work in the UK without restriction, who meet all of the essential requirements stated and whose applications are received by the closing date.
