ABOUT THE ROLE

WHO WE ARE
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (www.tradecommissioner.gc.ca) is a world-wide network of professionals in international business development, with preferred access to business knowledge and contacts who are committed to advancing Canadian interests abroad. In the Northeastern United States (NY, PA. NJ, CT, DE), these efforts are led out of the Consulate General of Canada in New York.

WHO YOU ARE
We are looking for someone exceptionally creative and ambitious, with strong problem-solving, critical thinking and networking skills, and above all committed to client success and prosperity with a solid grasp of the Life Sciences sector (e.g. digital health; medical technologies; or pharma/biotech).

WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Reporting to the Consul and Head of Innovation, the position is responsible for the Life Sciences sector. The Senior Trade Officer will support Canadian companies that are seeking to grow their business and work with a deep local network of potential customers, investors and partners in NY, PA, NJ, CT and DE. The Senior Trade Officer will also lead the Canadian Technology Accelerator (CTA) program (www.ctaconnects.com) on Digital Health with the flexibility of implementing additional accelerator programs.

HOW WILL YOU DO IT?
• Develop, plan and implement business development program objectives, including managing budgets, tracking and reporting of results, planning and delivering events, supporting official visits, and identifying and implementing opportunities for continuous improvement;
• Strengthen and establish relationships with Canadian stakeholders and partners to support program recruitment;
• Work in close relationship with Consulate colleagues, headquarters, and other Canadian missions in the United States and around the world;
• Build and maintain a strong network of diverse local contacts to support program objectives; including identifying mentors, subject matter experts and potential clients;
• Monitor, analyze and report on local economic issues that have an effect on Canada-United States relations;
• Engage stakeholders in order to advance advocacy and outreach opportunities; and
• Draft communications for social media, website and other marketing/promotional material


Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree

Language:
Fluency in English (oral and written)

Experience:
• A minimum of two (2) years of direct experience in a business development role with external clients, including experience touching the Life Sciences sector (e.g. digital health; medical technologies; or pharma/biotech);
• Experience in developing relationships with clients, stakeholders and influencers, and in obtaining, preparing, and conducting meetings with private sector clients (e.g., business to business meetings, sales meetings, cold calls, etc.)
• Experience in project management (including strategic planning, tracking/reporting results and budget management)
• Experience in providing strategic advice to management and/or clients on international business issues.



Asset Qualifications:
Fluency in French (oral and written)

Operational Requirements:
Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff (LES) regulations of 37.50 hours per week. Occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends, may be required with advance notice.


Condition(s) of Employment:
• Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check; and
• Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with United States protocol directives for foreign missions. In this respect, applicants must confirm independent work authorization in the United States (e.g. US Citizen, U.S Legal Permanent Resident (LPR), or specific visa categories (e.g. dependents of Diplomatic and Official Visas holders)) as required by the Department of State for employment in a foreign mission.
• All new hires on or after the effective date of October 6, 2021 are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment and to attest that they are fully vaccinated prior to their starting date unless accommodation measures are granted.
