Summary of position:
The High Commission of Canada in Canberra is looking to welcome a dedicated and energetic individual to work as a Chef de Cuisine at the Official Residence. Under the general supervision of the High Commissioner, the incumbent is responsible for preparing and overseeing all culinary aspects of Canada’s representation. This includes identifying appropriate Canadian and local cuisine and preparing such cuisine for all meals served at the Official Residence, including official hospitality events such as formal and informal luncheons, dinners, and receptions.

Under the supervision of the High Commissioner:

• Plan menus and prepare all meals served at the Official Residence
• Work collaboratively with other staff as part of the team working at the Official Residence
• Oversee the work of any temporary staff engaged to support events at the Official Residence
• Manage relationships with food suppliers
• Manage the food inventory and supplies
• Perform other related duties

Essential qualifications:
Essential Qualifications:

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:

• Certificate or Diploma in Commercial Cookery / Hospitality Management OR an equivalent combination of Education and experience

Language:

• Fluency in English, both written and oral

Experience:

• A minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience working as a chef in a similar position at a diplomatic or international organization or at a private residence, OR a minimum or 3 years' experience working as a chef in a restaurant or hotel environment or catering

Rated Requirements:

The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

Language:

• Fluency in French, both written and oral
Experience:
• Extensive experience as an executive/diplomatic-level chef in a restaurant or hotel
• A minimum of 2 years of experience in supervising a team of one or more employees
• Experience of managing formal events of up to 50 guests and receptions of up to 100 guests

Operational Requirements:
Operational Requirements (full time, 37.5 hrs / week)

• Ability to work overtime
• Annual leave may be restricted due to operational needs
• As a member of the Canadian diplomatic presence abroad, requirement to adhere to Canada's Code on Values & Ethics
• Hours of Work: 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week
• Ability to undergo training

Condition(s) of Employment:
The successful candidate must:

• Able to obtain and retain a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal background check. This clearance is a requirement prior to appointment from the Government of Canada. This involves, among other things, Australian Federal Police checks, credit checks, and validation of qualifications. The required level of security clearance must be maintained throughout the employment period.
• Only Australian citizens, permanent residents or those holding a valid visa permitting them to work in Australia will be eligible to apply. Considerations may be given to mission employees’ spouses who meet merit criteria. The High Commission of Canada in Australia is unable to provide employment sponsorship.
• The possession of a valid working visa is also a condition of employment for this position that you are expected to continue to meet throughout your employment. By accepting this offer, you agree to comply with this condition.
• All new hires on or after the effective date of October 6, 2021 are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment and to attest that they are fully vaccinated prior to their starting date unless accommodation measures are granted.
